We are using case studies of hotels throughout Britain—in London, Hull, Glasgow, Poldhu, Cornwall, Buxton and Matlock Bath, and several places along the coast of Kent—to explore the various ways that hotels were used in World War One.
Our sources include diverse central and local government records, chamber of commerce minutes and the hotel trade press that document the status of hotels on the eve of war, and the contested wartime requisitioning and repurposing of establishments in Britain at the war’s end.
